I am a foreigner here in China. I dont think there is any so-called "English grammar or phonetics" Readings and oral practices will let you getting use to a language usage. I am learning Chinese Mandarin now but I dont think there are sets of rules or grammar in Chinese!

You are right about how reading and speaking automatically help you to get used to a language. But it's very diffcult to do all that practicing that you were refering to in a Chinese environment. Anyway, as for your question of Chinese grammar... I don't think it's as strict as English as there aren't tenses and plurals and concord etc. But hey, Chinese is not that easy to master! I think most foreigners have problems with Chinese collective nouns and sentence structuring because it's very different from English. Well, good luck with learning Chinese.
