You need to be careful to fill in the grids correctly. Note that there are boxes across the top of each grid for you to write in your answer. The computer reads only the bubbled-in circles, but writing in the answer can help ensure that you grid the right number or symbol in each column. You don't have to write in your answer first, but since gridding an answer correctly can be tricky, it's a good idea to do so.
There are four columns and boxes, but not every answer will take up four places. If the answer doesn't require four columns, you can start gridding anywhere, as long as the complete answer fits. For instance, if the answer were 56, you could grid a 5 in the first column and a 6 in the second, or use the second and third columns, or use the third and fourth columns (see the grids below). The computer will read all of these as an answer of "56." But it makes the most sense to start in the first column on the left, since some answers will need all four columns. The exception is zero -- you have to start gridding in the second column because there is no zero in the first. In general, we recommend that you start in the first column on the left so you don't even have to think about it.
