A former Royal Navy Surgeon, Dr. Henry John Lindeman migrated to NSW Australia from London and purchased a HunterValley property near Gresford in the north-eastern reaches of the Hunter. The property was named ‘Cawarra’ after an Aboriginal word meaning ‘beside running water’. It was here in 1843 that Dr. Lindeman first began planting vines, starting what was to become NSW Australia’s oldest continuous winemaking operation. Valley
Favouring table wines in preference to the more intoxicating rums and spirits of his navy days, Dr. Lindeman swiftly built up large stocks of quality vintages from Riesling. Verdelho, and Shiraz plantings. In a shrewd move, he decided only to release fully matured wines and this qickly earned him a reputation for the highest quality.
Since it was first established in the HunterValley in 1843, Lindemans’ pioneering spirit and dedication has enabled the brand to enjoy phenomenal success, from its first award in Paris in 1867 to the honour of being named the “Official Supplier of Wine” to the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Its success in Australia is matched overseas, particularly in the USA where in 1998 Lindemans was named a “Hot Brand” for the tenth consecutive year by the influential magazine ‘Impact’. Lindemans has also been named ‘International Winery of the year’ for 10 consecutive years by the ‘Wine & Spirit’ magazine and has been entered into its ‘Hall of Fame’.
