It's a battle to the death as the Taliban, the deadly extremists which fight in the mountains of Afghanistan, take on the elusive I.R.A., the hard-hitting masters of Ireland's urban jungles.
爱尔兰共和军（Irish Republican Army，简称IRA）
爱尔兰共和军成立于1919年，是爱尔兰新芬党的军事机构。总部设在都柏林，成员分布于南北爱尔兰。
爱尔兰共和军是1919年由旨在建立独立的爱尔兰共和国的民族主义军事组织“爱尔兰义勇军”改编而成。1921年12月，英国同爱尔兰签订条约，允许爱尔兰南部26郡成立“自由邦”，享有自治权，北部6郡划归英国，即北爱尔兰。
1922年爱尔兰共和军因反对把爱尔兰分割成南北两部分的英爱条约而遭到镇压。1937年爱尔兰独立后，北爱尔兰仍处于英国的统治下。爱尔兰共和军宣布继续为实现南北统一而斗争，并实行暴力活动。1939年开始在英国制造爆炸事件，被爱尔兰政府和英国政府取缔。1954年10月宣布停止在爱尔兰南部军事活动，把矛头指向北爱尔兰的英军，旨在以武力统一爱尔兰。
1993年，英国和爱尔兰曾共同发起北爱和平进程，但一再因解除武装问题搁浅。为挽救濒于崩溃的北爱和平进程，2001年10月，爱尔兰共和军的政治组织新芬党呼吁爱尔兰共和军放下武器。爱尔兰共和军于次日宣布开始解除武装，并将部分武器置于“不使用状态”，但是解除武装行动不久后中止。
自1968年至2002年7月，在英国的北爱尔兰地区以及爱尔兰共和国境内共有3600人在暴力冲突中丧生，爱尔兰共和军及其它组织至少应对其中2000人的死亡负责。
