主要领导人有卡尔·李卜克内西、罗莎·卢森堡、梅林、蔡特金等。斯巴达克团在群众中进行反对帝国主义战争的宣传，揭露德国帝国主义的侵略政策和社会民主党右翼领导人的叛变行为。1918年斯巴达克团号召了十一月革命，同年11月改组为斯巴达克同盟，12月正式建立德国共产党。
