Book Description

Told by the band themselves and manager Paul McGuinness, with pictures from their own archives, this story of U2 allows access into the inner life of one of the greatest rock bands. It presents worse hangovers, prayer meetings and wild parties, encounters with Presidents and Popes, and intimate accounts of the creation of their classic songs.

Synopsis

"I always thought the job was to be as great as you could be."

- Bono.

This is the story of U2, in their own words and pictures. Told with wit, insight and astonishing candour by the band themselves and manager Paul McGuinness, with pictures from their own archives, "U2 By U2" allows unprecedented access into the inner life of the greatest rock band of our times. Bad haircuts, worse hangovers, prayer meetings and wild parties, encounters with Presidents and Popes, intimate accounts of the creation of all their classic songs, it is all here in a beautifully-presented book overseen by the band with the same passion for substance, style and immaculate attention to details familiar from their musical career.

"We wore it as a stubborn badge of pride that we weren't prepared to fall into line with every other group and take the fashionable stance of the day. We were uncool because we were hot, we just erupted as a live band."

- The Edge.

In 1975, four teenagers from Mount Temple School in Dublin gathered in a crowded kitchen to discuss forming a band. The drum kit just about fit into the room, the lead guitarist was playing a homemade guitar, the bassist could barely play at all and nobody wanted to be the singer. Over thirty years later, Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jnr are still together, bound by intense loyalty, passionate idealism and a relentless belief in the power of rock and roll to change the world.

"We are trying to pin down something elusive, something that represents where we are, emotionally, physically, spiritually, but is also fresh and exciting. If it is not absolutely the best it can be, then why bother?"

- Adam Clayton.

"I have read a lot of rubbish about U2. Whenever I see us described in some mythic sense as masters of our own destiny, it makes me laugh. Being in U2 is more like riding a runaway train. We are just ordinary guys, hanging on to this thing for our lives."

- Larry Mullen Jnr.

1. This is a really good read !!!! Honestly,14 Dec 2006

By D. O'Toole "domo" (the UK)

I really like u2. Really like them. But the official books have been somewhat of a disapointment. When I found out this book was coming out to partner the u218 best of ( an album I will not buy. The 3rd volume of there best of must be out in 2010 and most of the tracks are on the first two best of's anyhow. Anyway ....)I decided not to bother investing.

Someone, however got it me as a gift and after reading it through I must say it's a great book and the most honest and genuiene feeling book I have read about them

Don't be put off by the dodgy cover ( although fair play to them for looking back to the begining )

This is worth a look

2. A great insight into what it takes to make a successful team,28 Nov 2006

By Juliet Platt (Wiltshire, UK)

This is a great book, presented as a series of reminiscent conversations between the 4 members of U2 and their manager, as they reflect on different periods of the band's history. What comes across very clearly is how they all differ from each other: they each have certain foibles and idiosyncracies that they acknowledge and respect in each other, often in a gently mocking and self-deprecating way, which makes entertaining reading. It is touching to read about how they stand by each other, and there is a clear sense that U2 are very much about life and death - they're not just a rock band.

The interesting thing is that U2 is such a model of successful team dynamics. The shared vision and quest for the perfect melody/album/gig is what compels them and keeps pulling them forward into the future. And along the way they each get to bring their own stuff to the party - Bono's chaotic creative process and intuition, Edge's technical brilliance and dogged determination, Larry's "so what" tests, Adam's steadiness and wisdom and Paul's expert management. It's all held together with great humour, authenticity, honesty, patience and love. A great lesson in hard work, determination, motivation and a healthy acknowledgement of what work life balance really is, even if sometimes it's hard to live up to. A must read for any music fan, and anyone who finds themselves working in a team environment where the whole needs to be greater than the sum of its parts.

3. Honest Down to Earth Ordinary Guys on a Journey,29 Sep 2006

By druid "druid" (Dublin Ireland)

Four guys on a collision course at a crossroads could have become a car wreck, instead they gelled in to one - the global phenomena U2. There are many books about the band at various stages of their career, some good some not so good, but as they sit down with their manager Paul McGuinness they discuss the truth about their lives in the band and explain as to how 4 very different men can make such rich and passionate music for us to enjoy, if they had similar personalities I doubt very much that U2 would be still a band. Edited brilliantly it is written in a retrospective discussion style each man gives his opinion on their journey so far peronally and as friends, they answer many questions, but they also ask much more which will be answered as they continue their journey. One thing that can be certain is that whatever happens they will forever be friends IF ever the roller coaster of U2 ends...

The book actually made me think Do I actually like them? That's a big question, I was brought up in the same city, I have uncanny similarities with each band member but with one in particular, maybe it's that I'm a "Dub" or it's much deeper. I have very similar politics, I love their music, I respect them, they ARE ordinary people in their private lives, yet together they explode in to a kaleidascope of colour, they are sticks of dynamite waiting for something to light the fuse, but do I like them? I have figured it out, as I look in to a mirror, I like things about these 4 friends that I like about myself, and dislike the things about them that I dislike about myself. I haven't found what I'm looking for - I'm about to go on a journey which will affect me the rest of my life - inspired by one of their songs and with their lyrics I know I will succeed.... maybe then I will understand....
