原国家主席刘少奇的夫人，新中国最传奇的女性王光美，前日凌晨在北京逝世，终年八十五岁。
王光美的家属和友人已计画在周内于北京八宝山革命公墓为王光美举行遗体告别仪式，然后将王光美遗体火化，但是否会和刘少奇一样将骨灰撒入大海则未决定。
王光美生前最后担任的公开职务是中国人口福利基金会发起的扶贫计画「幸福工程」的组委会主任。基金会一名负责人昨日向本报证实，王光美于前日凌晨三时左右，在北京解放军三○五医院逝世。据其表示，当时王光美的儿子及女儿等家人都在身边，医院已为王光美搭建了纪念堂，昨日已有很多人闻讯前往悼念。
「文革」期间，王光美曾入狱长达十二年，身体受到残酷的逼害，晚年证实患上了癌症，虽然中央有关方面组织专家医治，但几年前还是因肿瘤转移动过大手术，令她的身体状况更差。王光美做事一向认真，自从担任了「幸福工程」领导职务后，更是全身心投入，为此家人一直为她的健康担心。直到近两年，王光美才在医生和家人的极力劝阻下减少了工作量。

王光美的一生有很多身分：大家闺秀、数学女王、中国第一个原子物理的女硕士毕业生、万人仰慕的第一夫人、十二年的阶下囚，以及「幸福工程」组委会主任，一生大起大落。王光美丈夫国家主席刘少奇的冤案被称为共和国第一冤案，而王光美在文革前陪同丈夫外访时身穿旗袍高跟鞋的形象虽然令西方国家一致称赞，但这令她在「文革」中有了「奇装异服招摇国际」的罪状，在数十万人前被公开批斗了三次，甚至被指是「美国战略特务」。王光美曾表示，和丈夫被逼生离死别时刘少奇的名言「好在历史是人民写的」是她可以支撑下去的唯一力量。

晚年的王光美将全部精力都贡献给了「幸福工程」，为了给「幸福工程」筹款，王光美曾将母亲传给她的古董公开拍卖。王光美曾表示，在农村，母亲全力支撑□家庭的运转，因此，「幸福工程」将资助目标锁定在母亲。
王光美有六名兄长和四名妹妹，她排行第七，其中六哥王光英年龄和她相近也和她最要好。王光英在「文革」中也入狱八年，改革开放后成为着名「中国红色资本」之一，一九八三年创办了光大集团，九十年代出任全国人大副委员长至二○○三年退休。
