Elephant silhouettes at sunset, Botswana

This was shot in Chobe Reserve in Botswana. The elephant scenes at sunset were enough to ensure that I will revisit many times. In this image, a young one was curious about our truck and was headed over to take a look.

Toads camouflaged against dry leaves

Three leaf-litter toads collected within yards of each other almost disappear on a forest floor in Panama. Staying alive in the tropics, where nearly everything is food for something else, often calls for such trickery to fool a predator's eye.

Tiger diving underwater, California

I took this photo at Six Flags Marine World in Vallejo, California, in 2004. The trainers were throwing meat into a small pool to demonstrate the tigers' diving ability, and this beautiful creature looked right into my camera. The scowl on his face is not from disgust or anger; rather, it results from how these big cats scrunch up their nose to keep water out.

Two big gorillas give threatening stares in the Republic of Congo. These orphan gorillas are in a rehabilitation program, where it's hoped that they will learn the gorilla social structure and eventually become independent of human care.
