作者简介林语堂，1985年10月10日生于福建漳州，乳名和乐，名玉堂，后改语堂。22岁获上海圣约翰大学学士学位，27岁获美国哈佛大学比较文学硕士学位，29岁获德国莱比锡大学语言学博士学位，同年回国，先后执教于北京大学。北京师范大学，厦门大学和上海东吴大学，1936年后居住美国，此后主要用英文写作，1966年定居台湾，1967年受聘为香港中文大学研究教授。1975年荣任国际笔会副会长。1976年3月26日病逝于香港。葬于台北阳明山故居。林语堂用英文创作和翻译的一系列经典作品影响深远，奠定了他在国际文坛上的重要地位。

文摘The short stories in this volume are some of the most famous Chinese talesever told. They comprise some of the best——though not all of the best are here.The selection and retelling of these stories for Western readers impose a nec-essary limitation. Many famous stories have been omitted, either on accountof theme, matter, or basic assumptions of a different society or period, whichmake the retelling an impossible or unprofitable undertaking. I have selectedthose which I believe have a most nearly universal appeal, and which answermore to the purpose of a modern short story.
The purpose of a short story is, I believe, that the reader shall come awaywith the satisfactory feeling that a particular insight into human character hasbeen gained, or that his knowledge of life has been deepened, or that pity, love,or sympathy for a human being has been awakened. Nothing in the reader'sbasic assumptions should stand in the way, requiring elaborate explanation,in order that this desired effect may be achieved. I have chosen stories whichpresent no such difficulties and which make the achievement of this effect easyor possible, although I recognize that some of these stories will appeal to thereader because of the strangeness and exotic charm of a remote atmosphereand background.
The instinct to listen to a good story is as old as humanity itself. Tales havebeen told in China since history began. The Tsochuan （probably 3rd centuryB.C.） and certain chapters of Shiki （2nd century B.C.） abound in vivid descrip-tions of human character and immediate scenes of human conflicts.
