SANDRA works very simply. You need not be familiar with any programming language. SANDRA analyzes any structure formula (up to 70 atoms) which you enter via an elegant, flexible and fast graphic input system: freehand drawing with a mouse. You can draw single, double, triple and conjugated bonds. In addition, there are help functions for predefined fragments (templates) and user-defined fragments (self-defined templates). Some stereochemical notations are also available. SANDRA will then tell you where you find your required structure (or its analogue) in the "Beilstein Handbook," assuming the structure exists. At present the "Beilstein Handbook" contains all relevant critically evaluated information on more than one million organic compounds. The location of information from the Handbook on any particular compound requires a selective search technique and some knowledge of the Beilstein system of ordering. With SANDRA these problems have now been overcome. The output from SANDRA enables the user to retrieve the desired information from the Handbook in a few seconds, without any need to become involved with the intricacies of chemical nomenclature. Hardware Configuration: To use SANDRA successfully you must have an IBM PC XT/AT or an IBM compatible personal computer with at least 256k memory. The program has been tested on IBM PC XT/AT, Compaq Portable, Compaq Deskpro, Olivetti M 24 (in the USA Olivetti ATandT 6300), Toshiba T1100/T3100, and HP Vectra. This version of theSANDRA software supports IBM graphics (640 to 200 pixels), Hercules (720 to 348 pixels), EGA (640 to 350 pixels), Olivetti M 24 (640 to 400 pixels) as well as Toshiba (640 to 400 pixels). A MICROSOFT or compatible mouse is used as a graphics input device; a screen dump with pin writer can also be used. Each SANDRA user receives a customer identification card and a free subscription to the Beilstein Brief bulletin. Updates of SANDRA and other software packages from the Beilstein Institute will be made regularly to ensure that users are kept up-to-date.
