The sun is the one energy source thatsustains and links all life.
Ancient societies paid homage to the sun asa symbol of truth, justice and equality, as thefountainhead of wisdom, compassion andenlightenment, as the healer of physical andspiritual maladies, and, above all, as the sourceof fertility, growth, renewal and peace with nature.
Solar energy takes many different forms. Theheat of the atmosphere, derived from absorbed solarenergy, powers the winds and the cycle ofevaporation and precipitation. Wind energy can beharnessed with turbines, just as running water fromrain and melting snow is the energy source forhydroelectric power. The wind blowing acrossoceans and lakes transfers some of its energy to thewater below to form waves which, like the tides, may generate power.
The energy in biomass is derived from plantsand photosynthetic micro-organisms, which use theenergy of sunlight to synthesize organic compoundswhose chemical energy is released when they areburned. Even the energy in fossil fuels is actuallysolar energy that was first stored as Chemical energyin biomass and then transformed into coal, oil orgas over millions of years.
Today renewable solar energy is recognized bymany populations as being in harmony with theircultural traditions because of its peaceful andenvironmentally friendly associations. By reunitingscience and culture, and by making effective use ofwhat might be termed "the ultural tools of solartechnology", sustainable solar energy seems poisedto become the principal nergy of the future. Theefficient and economical use of solar energy derivedfrom the biomass, from wind and ocean power, from small hydroelectric facilities, from thermal, geothermal sources, and from photovoltaic and non nuclear hydrogen energy may well enable theworld to satisfy most of its energy requirements.
