We were in the Yukon for a week on the Hyland in September of 2005, and this was our "shortcut" down Dolly Varden creek to try and save 40 km of the Hyland and make sure we got out in time to catch our flights back to Manitoba. Needless to say, this was no shortcut. In the end, we had to deflate the boat, roll it all up and backpack everything out to the only road within 50 km, where we lucked out and had a couple of moose hunters come by 10 minutes later and offer to drop us off at the suggested put-in 30 km farther up the road. There's usually only a couple vehicles a week go down the road, so somebody was looking out for us. In the end, we had an awesome float down the Hyland, saw some wonderful wildlife up close and personal, ran a bunch of great whitewater, and dined the whole week on gourmet wilderness food cooked on a Primus Vari-Fuel that's been all over the Arctic with me.
