1972年2月21日，美国总统理查德-尼克松乘专机抵达北京首都机场，中国国务院总理周恩来前往迎接。周恩来对尼克松说：“你的手伸过世界最辽阔的海洋来和我们握手——25年没有交往了啊！”尼克松说：“这是中美两国领导人越过了一个大洋，越过相互敌对20多年的握手，这表明中美关系从此将揭开新的一页。
