德国指挥家、作曲家。在慕尼黑从赖因贝格尔和席林斯学习。1905-15年先后在苏黎世、斯特拉斯堡和吕贝克任剧院乐队指挥。1915～20年曼海姆歌剧院，1919～24 年任维也纳的音乐家管弦乐团指挥，1922～30年任莱比锡布业会堂管弦乐团指挥。1922年起其余生的大部分时间都在担任柏林爱乐乐团的指挥。1924年指挥过维也纳爱乐乐团，1927～30年和1947～54年是该团的主要指挥。历任1931年、1936年、1937年、 1943年、1944年和1951年拜罗伊特各届音乐节的指挥。1924年首次在伦敦和1925年在纽约演出。 1935年首次在科文特花园剧院指挥歌剧《特里斯坦与伊索尔德》（Tristan und Isolde）、他是萨尔茨堡音乐节和米兰斯卡拉上演瓦格纳《尼伯龙根的指环》(Ring)的常任指挥．有关纳粹统治时期他的立场问题之争论，导致 1936年撤消他任纽约爱乐交响乐团指挥的职务。1946年亲纳粹活动问题得到澄清后，重新开始他的国际性的指挥事业，并曾数次访问伦敦．他不愧为指挥艺术杰出的大师之一。作有2首交响曲，钢琴协奏曲和室内乐。

Listening to Furtwängler’s performances from the postwar period is to participate in some of the most intense realisations of the repertoire he held most dear, including that of Brahms with whom he shared a consuming interest in the roots of their German musical heritage.
Both in his writing and interpretative stance, Furtwängler sought to attain the heart of Brahms’s idiom through the imagery of its connections with nature.
Having wound down the tempo of the preceding movement using the tonal possibilities of Brahms’s instrumentation to reflect a decidedly autumnal sunset, Furtwängler allows the music to emerge as though from darkest night with the Finale’s horn-call resounding with all the warmth and reassurance of a shaft of morning sun breaking through the mists.
