《帕斯尚尔战役》讲述了一个受伤的军官（保罗·格罗斯饰）爱上一名护士（卡罗琳·德哈维纳斯饰）的故事。他与患慢性病的护士弟弟一起，协同加拿大士兵在帕斯尚尔的战场上同敌人作战……《帕斯尚尔战役》根据第一次世界大战的真实事件改编而成。故事的背景设置在帕斯尚尔战役的四个月内。帕斯尚尔战役爆发于1917年，参战双方主要是德国与英国。这场一战期间最著名的战役之一，从1917年7月31日开始，一直持续到11月6日。英军统帅率领部队攻占比利时的帕斯尚尔，以摧毁德军在该地的潜水艇基地。在这场伤亡人数惊人的残酷拉锯战中，盟军共有 32.5万人伤亡，德军则有26万人伤亡，战争最后以英军和加拿大军队攻占帕斯尚尔而宣告结束。

帕斯尚尔战役又称为第三次伊珀尔战役，于1917年7月31日开始,英军企图趁6月梅森战役的胜利,攻击佛兰德沿海的德军潜艇基地，以加速德国的崩溃。在经过16天的炮火准备(3000门火炮发射了450万发炮弹)之后，会同法军以16个师的兵力，向伊珀尔附近的德军展开猛攻。当时大雨使地面变为一片沼泽，分散配置的联军及其陷在沼泽内的坦克成了德军射击的靶子，双方的飞机也不能发挥作用。联军连续的进攻，只从出发地向前推进了6公里，11月10日战役结束。联军伤亡近30万人，德军伤亡27万人。
《帕斯尚尔战役》是第33届多伦多国际电影节开幕影片。加拿大影坛巨星保罗·格罗斯身兼该片编剧、导演、主演和制片人。格罗斯说，《帕斯尚尔战役》的灵感来自他祖父的亲身经历。他祖父因在一战期间杀害一名无辜的德国少年而抱恨终生。格罗斯旨在通过影片揭示这样一个道理：盟军虽然胜利了，但这种胜利并不纯粹，因为众多的参战将士终生遭受着恐惧、悔恨等精神折磨。
