About Agatha Christie
Agatha Christie is the world's best-known mystery writer. Her books have sold over a billion copies in the English language and another billion in 44 foreign languages. She is the most widely published author of all time in any language, outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare.
Her writing career spanned more than half a century, during which she wrote 80 novels and short story collections, as well as 14 plays, one of which, The Mousetrap, is the longest-running play in history. Two of the characters she created, the brilliant little Belgian Hercule Poirot and the irrepressible and relentless Miss Marple, went on to become world-famous detectives. Both have been widely dramatized in feature films and made-for-TV movies.
Agatha Christie also wrote romantic novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. As well, she wrote four non-fiction books including an autobiography and an entertaining account of the many expeditions she shared with her archaeologist husband, Sir Max Mallowan.
Agatha Christie died in 1976.

阿嘉莎·克莉丝蒂(Agatha Christie，1890-1976)生于英格兰的Devonshire。克莉丝蒂早年丧父，小时候并未受过正规教育，多靠母亲的指导与自修来充实自己。24岁(1914)时，本名阿嘉莎·玛丽·克那丽莎·米勒的克莉丝蒂嫁给了英国皇家空军军官阿奇坡·克莉丝蒂(ArchibaldChristie)后改姓夫姓。第一次大战期间她曾加入医疗机构担任护理工作，有机会接触并认识各种毒药的药性，因而垫定了日后小说中对于药性运用的基础。在这段时间中，她时常与姐姐玛姬一同阅读侦探小说，并且一起讨论讨论其中的布局与情节，因而勾起了写作的兴趣，并且写下了其第一本侦探小说《The Mysterious Affair at Styles》。不过当时曾遭多家出版商退稿(与柯南道尔当年的境遇一样)，最后终于在1920问世。克莉丝蒂这一次的婚姻生活并不顺利，1926年在发现其夫有婚外情，再加上其母过世的双重打击下，曾一度离奇失踪。1928年，这次婚姻在维持了14年后终告结束，为了弥平婚变的伤痛，便只身到海外旅行。期间在西亚(土耳其、埃及等地)的经验，提供了她《Murder on the Orient Express》、《Death on the Nile》 等名著的素材。1930年，在小亚细亚的旅途中与考古学家马克斯·马洛文(MaxMallowan)相识，并于同年九月结婚，从此夫唱妇随，常伴夫婿至北非考古，婚姻生活顺利。再婚后的克莉丝蒂则依然沿用前夫的姓为笔名，继续她的文学的创作工作。1976年一月十二日，克莉丝蒂与世长辞。
克莉丝蒂侦探小说作品的数量各家说法不一，著名的角色则以赫丘里．白罗(Hercule Poirot) 与珍·玛波(Miss Jane Marple) 最为着名，另外汤米与杜本丝夫妇 (Tommy and Tuppenece)也是几篇长篇小说的主角。角色若是能鲜活有人性，似乎都免不了地是脱胎于现实生活中，白罗与玛波也是同样的情形。白罗，取材自其邻居，一位逃避战乱的比利时难民。这位外国邻人的外型及言语举止，塑造了白罗特殊的风格。然而，当白罗的探案开始随着时日逐渐累加时，克莉丝蒂显然意识到当初将白罗的年龄定位得太老了，白罗能够活跃于其作品的时日显然不太可能太长。因此，自1930 年起，克莉丝蒂也以一位常与其母亲喝茶聊天的老太太为原型，设定了另一位风格迥异的主角—玛波小姐。在克莉丝蒂的长篇小说中，几乎可以说完全是这两位名探的天下。正如同柯南道尔的作法，克莉丝蒂也于1975年的作品《Curtain》中为其笔下的神探白罗划上了句点。可惜的是白罗并没有如福尔摩斯般的幸运，因为克莉丝蒂也於隔年随着白罗的脚步离开了人世。
此外，克莉丝蒂的作品由于内容总是弥漫着英国乡间较为悠闲的气息(可能跟她第二次婚后总是与夫婿远离人世的生活有点关系)，剧情的步调通常较为缓慢，再加上其作品往往偏重于人际间微妙的关系与精致的对话，因此可能有些读者在刚开开始接触克莉丝蒂的作品时，会难以接受。就笔者个人的经验来说，建议在阅读克氏作品时，最好是找个比较悠闲的时间与情境，放松自己的心情，比较容进入并享受其所建构的世界。
