The latest collection of short animated films from Expanded Entertainment is made up exclusively of British pieces, many having been shown previously on television in England.

That doesn't mean that "The British Animation Invasion" is any better than previous around-the-world compilations, but it does give us a sense of what Great Britain's animation industry is up to.

As with most of these collections, this one has its high and low segments, and includes examples of pencil drawings, computer-generated art, clay and puppet stop-motion work, paper-sculptures and the classical style painted-cel animation we are more used to seeing.

As such, it's an overview of many artistic styles and quite often is visually stunning. On the storytelling side, some are funny, some are poignant and more than you might expect tend to be abstract and downright weird.

Not all intend to tell stories, of course, and in fact much of this particular compilation is made up of TV commercials and even a pair of music videos (including Stephen Johnson's animation for Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer")

Highlights include "Jollity Farm," which has strange animals that have resulted from the indiscriminate dumping of toxic waste, and which leads off the film; "Next," a puppet-driven look at William Shakespeare and the magic of theater; three pieces by Candy Guard, which are to cartoons what Cathy Guisewite's "Cathy" is to comic strips; nearly all of the commercials, but especially one about a dairy bringing sunshine to your home; and the film's climactic piece, "Creature Comforts," by Nick Park, which won an Oscar this year and features clay-animated animals in the zoo being interviewed about their caged lives.

There are many, however, that are simply strange, which is expected in these collections, but in this case perhaps too many. That has something to do with the film as a whole simply being too long, nearly a full two hours.

Still, there is much to admire here, and animation fans will have a great time. And, as with most of these collections, it's not for children.

Though unrated, "The British Animation Invasion" would probably carry a PG for some cartoon violence, a couple of profanities, a few vulgar jokes and one piece that briefly displays some nude photos.
