There are passages of near-exotic intrigue, ("Enrique and Veronica"), hybrid orchestra and electronic pulse quickenings ("Clockwork"), and rhythmic cavalcades (The Chase Begins"). There are a few pieces that offer momentary respite ("Epilogue"), but given the foreboding that surrounds them, they end up feeling like doom and disaster are always lurking in the shadows. The film's dark bearing is powerfully underscored by the use of dozens of cellists and bass players.
