如果玩家玩过《法老王》或者《恺撒》系列，那么对这款游戏应该不会陌生，游戏跟过去传统经典的游戏方式一样，都是从城市建设开始，然后吸引居民到来，安居乐业的生活。在游戏之初，埃及人作为狩猎者和采集者以群居的方式生活在分散的村落中，过着自给自足的生活。当农业机制建立起来以后，玩家将看到古代文明的发展由此拉开序幕。农民努力生产食物，并且利用多余的食物来换取特定的物品。于是，这导致了手工业的兴起，当手工艺人将原材料制成日常用品进行物品交换的时候，社会发展又导致了阶级体系的产生以及中层社会和上层社会的出现等。当然，要想是自己的城市繁荣兴旺，玩家除了需要建造各类民房管理资源设施外，还要建立各种制度以促进文明的发展。其中，寺庙可以发挥教育和医疗的作用；监工可以管理公共建设工程项目，比如水渠，寺庙和广场的建造等；而将军则可以维护城市的治安秩序，并且指挥军队对敌人的武装侵袭予以还击。此外，玩家还必须考虑商队路线的建立，以便能够进口外来物品，并将其转化为奢侈的物品，以促使国民更加努力的工作。在游戏中，玩家除了建设外，要将埃及文明推倒一个顶点，还有一件必须实施的工程-----建造金字塔，这也是游戏整个的中心思想。
《Immortal Cities: Children of the Nile》运用无比写实的手法来刻画当时鼎盛神秘的埃及，游戏采用《地球帝国》（Empire Earth)的3D引擎，在宏观表现上相当出色。在全3D的游戏场景中，玩家可以自如的缩放和转动游戏场景，除了传统的俯视等大视角以外，玩家还可以一直拖放到地面上，并且以动作游戏中的第一人称视角在街道上行走。此外，游戏在其他细节处理方面也极为精心，所有的细节部分都被挖掘了出来，做到了贴近现实。比如猴子到处玩耍游逛（有钱人可以在花园里饲养猴子，玩家还可以拿东西喂猴子吃），以及人们朝着鳄鱼和河马投掷石块以驱赶它们，你可以漫步在闻名已久的尼罗河畔等等，这些细节都描绘的颇为细腻真实。玩家可以慢慢探索这款游戏所带来的各种惊喜，游戏世界无比庞大，画面华丽而真实，内容颇具人文特色和历史内涵。开发公司的区域指导兼董事长Chris Beatrice指出：“《Immortal Cities: Children of the Nile》是在城市建设类游戏上的一次大的革命，玩家一旦进入游戏的庞大世界中，就会发现它具有以往游戏所没有的深蕴内涵。”
