少年时代(1959-1975)
亚当斯于1959年11月7日出生在加拿大安大略省的金斯顿，父母是英国外交官。
由于父母从事外交工作，亚当斯小时就周游列国，其中包括英格兰、以色列、法国、葡萄牙和奥地利。
1973年亚当斯一家定居于加拿大的维多利亚。
1975年，亚当斯辍学，开始追求自己的音乐梦想。那时他只有15岁。
音乐生涯•70年代
虽然年纪不大，但亚当斯已把自己所有的精力放在了音乐上，辍学后，他加入了乐队，开始在酒吧里演出。1977年，他所在的乐队Sweeney Todd发行了一张名为“If Wishes Were Horses”
的专辑，并由他担任主唱。但是他的生活依然是艰苦的，他不得不经常靠打零工维持生活。
可正是在温哥华的一家唱片店打工时，他遇到了Jim Vallance，并与其开始了歌曲创作。现在回过头来看，这次偶然相遇成就了乐坛上的一对黄金搭档，为我们奉献了“Summer Of 69” “Heaven”等多首金曲。
1978年，18岁的亚当斯将自己的几个歌曲小样寄给了A&M唱片公司，并在不久与该公司签约。
80年代
亚当斯的第一张专辑，即他的同名专辑，于1980年2月发行，这也是“Adams-Vallance”的第一个产品。（该专辑取得金唱片销量）
在这段时间，亚当斯和Vallance还为Vallance的乐队Prism写了不少歌，其中“Don’t Let Him Know”成为Prism历史上唯一一首进入Billboard前四十名的歌曲，对于亚当斯，这也是他的第一次，但绝对不是他的唯一。
他的第二张专辑,You Want It,You Got It,在纽约录制完成，并于1981年发行。
第三张专辑，Cuts Like A Knife,于1983年发行，这是他第一张大获成功的专辑。其中主打单曲“Cuts Like A Knife”登上了Billboard的第八名。这张专辑中的歌曲一直是他演唱会上的常客。
1984年11月5日，亚当斯迎来了自己的第二十五个生日，他的第四张专辑，Reckless，也在当天发行，在Billboard的专辑排行榜上，Reckless坐上了头把交椅，而这也带动了他单曲的走势，其中包括“Run To You”“Summer Of 69”和他的第一首#1单曲“Heaven”。（该专辑达五白金销量）
同年，他与Tina Turner合作的“It’s Only Love”获葛莱美提名。
亚当斯的第五张专辑，IntoThe Fire，于1987年发行，这是最后一张所有歌曲均由亚当斯和Vallance合作完成的专辑。
“Live! Live! Live!”是与1988年在比利时演唱会的现场录音，该演唱会通过MTV向全球直播。
90年代
Waking Up The Neighbours可谓是亚当斯音乐生涯中的巅峰之作，这张于1991年9月发行的专辑收录了（Everything I Do）I Do It For You-电影“Robin Hood:Prince Of Thieves”的主题曲。这张专辑和这首单曲在1991和1992年在多个国家登上榜首位置。其中单曲更是创造了在英国单曲排行榜连续16周排名第一和美国单曲销售连续17周冠军，销量300万的奇迹。
他的下一张专辑是于93年发行的精选辑“So Far So Good”包括一首新歌“Please Forgive Me”。

1996-1999年亚当斯每年都发行一张专辑。其中1996年专辑“18 Till I Die”中歌曲“Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman”为他获得了第二个奥斯卡提名。97年的冬天，他发行了现场专辑MTV Unplugged,98年，他发行了录音室专辑On A Day Like Today，99年，他发行了精选辑The Best Of Me。
进入21世纪

2001年亚当斯发行了两张现场DVD“Live At The Budokan”“Live At Slane Castle”。

2004年，亚当斯发行了自己6年来的首张录音室大碟Room Service，该专辑在英国排名第四，在全欧洲排名第一，并在专辑港发行的第一周就卖出了44万张。
2005年，亚当斯发行了双CD精选辑，作为对自己25年个人音乐生涯的回顾。同是他也发行了一张现场DVD—“Live In Lisbon”。
近况
亚当斯继续为电影创作歌曲，如“The Guardian”的主题曲“Never Let Go”，而他为“Bobby”创作的“Never Gonna Break My Faith”为他获得了2007年金球奖提名。
今年6月，在汉堡的演唱会上，亚当斯表示自己的新录音室专辑有希望在今年的秋天发行。
