《回归之路4》中，玩家将要解开神秘岛屿上的又一项未知秘密。故事延续了前代《回归之路3：神秘图书馆》的结局，但是这款游戏也可以在《回归之路》三部曲之外独立成章。玩家找到了可以前往岛上之前未经探索部分的办法新的冒险开始了。这款游戏再次需要玩家的冒险、逻辑、果敢和解决问题的能力去逐渐地解开全新冒险中的谜题。
在新作中，故事的主角Kales发现了一个秘密的传送系统，将要寻找系列至今为止一直被禁止使用的接近的RHEM之岛的出口。玩家必须收集钥匙的几个部分从而使用传送系统。玩家将要再一次探索这个巨大的奇幻世界，其中充斥着陌生的载具和建筑，未知的机能和机械，秘密的小路和门道，不过玩家这次将会见到新的角色，能够帮助玩家解开将要面对的一些秘密。像之前一样，所有这些都是一个极大奥秘的组成部分，玩家的任务就是一个接一个地寻找答案，并揭开RHEM岛上的秘密。
