中东军事爱好者谈中国战机在伊朗
歼-7M 目前在伊朗空军服役 (IRIAF)。从技术理论上说,他们知道怎样生产该种战机,而且伊朗获得了生产这种飞机生产许可证(数目有限的)。

Iran obtained a license for the production of this aircraft (in limited number), so as technological know how.
Actually, the aircraft is obsolete compared with latest standards. It's posession by Iran was mainly a mean to acquire aircraft design and production technologies so as to guarantee a viable defence against imediate foes such as Iraq or potential so as Azerbaidjan. But against modern aicraft in UAE or Saudi inventory, this aircraft is fully inefficient...
Though, the F-7 provided a good example of avionic upgrade for the IRIAF persoonel. I shoud remind the fact that the F-7M is a derivation of the elder MiG 21 which has been upgraded for China by Northrop Grumman. This latter was also a big supplier of aircraft and technology to Iran before the revolution.
These facts must have driven the Iranian commanders to choose the F-7M for its cheap cost and its similarity with some Iranian US origin aircrafts.
Well, I think all that is enough to understand the why and the how of this aircraft in Iran's fleet.

Just for another precision, IRIAF keeps a lot of secret toward the outter world about its aircraft inventory, only suppositions made by various groups worldwide give some detail of the current state of IRIAF.

What does this mean? An upgrade from what, our F-14s, or F-4s???
Iran's procurement of the F-7N was not so much deliberate as it was pushed upon us. It was in a deal from China that in order to deliver other weapons, the F-7s would have to come along. So we took them, out of desperation at the time. Originally for the beloved( ) IRGCAF, and when they were unable to fly and maintain them, the IRIAF took them over. They are garbage and as of today, they are used for fast jet trianers only. The F-7 experience is why we havn't purchased any other aircraft from China. We had so many problems with them breaking down that it was ridiculous. And BTW, welcome here dear sosolp, sorry if I was hard on the Chinese hardware, I think the newer J-10 types are better quality.

I never said that it was an "upgrade" for the F-14 !!!!!!!!
But actually, as Iran had quite many technologies from US, coming especially from Northrop Grumman, the F-7M was a completition somehow of this technological "panorama".
Moreover, the Chinese were among those who taught the Iranian engineers about the reverse engineering methods and techs. So our level in the present day is somehow linked to their teachings.
However, I agree, the F-7M and many other Chinese military hardware quality and reliance are poor. Often in Europe, the Chinese sub standard goods are sold at the cheapest price, but they decay soon before one year... As for PC hardware for example. The Chinese have a ot to learn yet about quality product.

10 years ago, I lost a friend in an F-7 due to a faulty ejection seat. So go figure whats point of having F 7 in our Air force ?

And the Chinese did teach us about what they are masters of. Reverse engineering. Except that they copy everything to a lower quality and standard.

Let us be frank,
as an aircraft for the F-7 doesn't have bad dog fighting performances. It biggest deficiency is it's short range. A problem with all MiG-21/F-7 variants. However, it's limited avionics package and weapons load make it a bad aircraft for conduction long range patrols and interceptions.
THis is something a big country like Iran needs. Therefor, looking at raw performance (not avionics or weapons types) an aircraft like the F-14/F-15/MiG-31 better suits Irans needs.

Dear AP,
He got killed in an F-7 10 years ago in a fly-by in Tehran. His aircraft lost hydraulics and the ejection seat malfunctioned. The only thing he did was to glide away as far as possible to avoid populated areas before smashing into a building. The aircraft was shattered all over the crash site. I don't remember if there were any fatalities on the ground or not. He was the youngest IRIAF pilot at that time and the only son of his father. It was a real disaster and a huge blow to his family. His family hardly ever recovered his death. God bless his soul and all our airmen who never came back home

Talking about fatalities in F7, I remember my friend’s older brother also got killed in a malfunction of the ejecting seat of his craft in Pakistan while training there during the war time, There was a rumor that he was assassinated but never the less he was killed in the malfunction of his ejecting seat in his F7 after his craft malfunctioned and he was trying to eject.

Hi guys. If I'm not being wrong te F-7 would be close to the mig-21 F-13 variant变形
which is one of the early mig-21s.
I don't know about the F-7 upgrade, but all I know is that the F- 13 had range problems.
The weak armament were also another issue. One of the mikhoyan design bureau engineers recently admitted that the early versions were not as responsive in maneuverability as it direct rival The mirage III. Indeed during a friendly exchange between French Normandy Niemen Squad and their Russian counterparts。 the mig had problems in remaining within the imposed flight envelope while performing against Mirage III.
So I presume that the F-7 is certainly better than the Mig21-F13 but it is at best a good training aircraft. The F-7 was also one of the first Chinese attempts to copy Russian aircrafts ands I have heard that they had lots of
problems in reverse engineering the aircraft.

I got a chance yesterday to walk around and check out the cockpit
of a mig-21u trainer .
It is unbelievably cramped in the front seat. I feel sorry for its pilot
as the visibility
sucks , and the mig turned into a fireball with any hit on it. I imagined how many Iraqis went to hell in that little cockpit.

I have a question regarding IRIAF using F7 for training new pilots into jet fighter roles,
as F7 is a very unfriendly and unforgiving aircraft, why does IRIAF use such a plane for training the new pilots?
