Power Cut

The power went out all of a sudden and left nothing but sighing and scolding from all the computer users in each dorm. It was half past 10 in the evening while

most of us were still buried in the composition of dissertation upon graduation.

I was, freed from the computer screen and though it was not good for the pc to be cut off from electricity, it had made for me an opportunity to make call back

to my parents and chatted.

There was, surprising enough, laughters from another form as the girls scattered

in their own dorm gathered together and talked, creating an amicable air of refreshing and energizing.

It was near eleven o’clock when I finished my talk with mom on phone and joined

the other girls in that dorm. It was indeed, as it turned out for me, great fun

and the laughters together did assert a miraculous effect in driving away the exhaust by bringing us much closer to each other. There was nothing else we could

do except for the very primary activities of human---talking face-to-face, standing next to each other with a smile(despite the darkness, light from the outside street made it possible to see each other’s face), playing jokes—simply human jokes, not any associated with electronic equipment, and it was not hard at all to tell that we were all enjoying it.

Ten past eleven, the electricity was back and the room was flooded with light again. The fulfillment on each’s face was so evident and genuine and we were now

so close to each other (We even used chatting software to talk with the classmate next door before!) The happy gathering went on till half past eleven, when we

had to wave goodnight to each other in reluctance.

I went back to my dorm for sleep, couldn’t help wondering what had divided us and made us feel so isolated from each other and like hermits even when we have been living merely next door, with a secret wish for the electricity to go out at

a due time each day….
