Borland Previews C++ Technologies for 2.5G/3G Mobile Applications on the Symbian™ Operating System

Synopsis: Borland today previewed its emerging C++ technology that supports software development for mobile devices such as smartphones, communicators, and voice-enabled PDAs.

Borland extends leadership in wireless, providing developers the freedom to build mobile applications with C++ and Java™. With its earlier release of Borland® JBuilder™ MobileSet, - and this emerging C++ technology, Borland will broaden its wireless initiative and enable developers to rapidly develop mobile applications in Java and C++ languages.

Borland and Symbian continue innovation in enabling 2.5G/3G mobile devices and applications through C++ support for Symbian™ OS, the most widely licensed operating system among manufacturers of next-generation mobile phones.

First public preview of this technology at BorCon™ 2002, the 13th Annual Borland Conference on May 20, 2002 in Anaheim.

BORCON, Anaheim, CA - May 20, 2002 : Borland Software Corporation (Nasdaq NM: BORL) announced today that it will preview its emerging C++ technology for the development of mobile applications for 2.5G and 3G mobile phones and voice-enabled Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) that run on the Symbian™ operating system (OS) at BorCon™ 2002, the 13th annual Borland® conference on May 20, 2002. To support innovation through the emerging wireless market, an early release is currently planned to be available during the second half of 2002.

Building on the release of Borland® JBuilder™ MobileSet 2.0 in January 2001, the preview of the Borland C++ technology will extend Borland's support of enhanced mobile application development. As currently planned, the Borland C++ solution will enable developers to rapidly produce C++ applications that run on the Symbian OS, an operating system for advanced, data-enabled mobile phones. As currently planned the solution will also support the development of C++ applications for Nokia's Series 60 platform, which runs on the Symbian OS.

"We welcome Borland's support for C++ and Java," said Jouko Häyrynen, vice president of Nokia's global developer program, Forum Nokia. "The market for advanced, data-enabled mobile handsets is growing quickly, and Borland's C++ technology for mobile devices will enable millions of developers to bring new applications to market and capitalize on this great opportunity. "

"2002 will be an exciting year for mobile devices - they are finally becoming powerful enough to run the interactive multimedia applications that users expect," said Jessica Figueras, e-infrastructure analyst at Ovum. "This year, nearly 165 million devices capable of running these sorts of applications will ship worldwide. But this means nothing without the tools to create the applications in the first place."

"Borland's reputation for rapid application development tools, and its existing developer community, align well with Symbian's desire to see effective and quick exploitation of the power of Symbian OS mobile phones as application platforms in 2.5G and 3G wireless environments." said Mark Edwards, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Symbian. "We are pleased to forge a relationship with Borland supporting our licensees' requirements."

"Symbian OS has been adopted by leading mobile phone manufacturers and our support of this platform underscores Borland's intent to provide developers with every opportunity to build advanced mobile applications," said Simon Thornhill, vice president and general manager of rapid application development solutions for Borland. "With the addition of the C++ solution to Borland's JBuilder MobileSet, developers will have the freedom to build mobile applications with either C++ or Java."
