Cisco has a proprietary method for creating VLANs called
Inter-Switch-Link, or ISL. This is sometimes referred to as 'trunking'.
ISL requires hardware changes, and none of the HP interfaces support these hardware changes.
The 802.1Q standard specifies VLAN Tagging. This will eventually 'supercede', or replace ISL. VLAN Tagging allows the interface to 'tag' each frame with a unique tag that identifies the VLAN to which
the frame is destined. 802.1Q allows an interface to participate in
Multiple VLANs, as long as the VLANs are 802.1Q-compliant.
Because there is not yet a large demand for NICs to participate in
multiple VLANs, HP's network cards do not support 802.1Q or trunking.
